I obtained my under graduate degree in business from Seattle University. I then went on to law school at the University of Idaho. In 1987 I became licensed to practice law in Washington. I began my career in law working primarily in insurance defense litigation. In 1998 I decided to open my own practice focusing exclusively on family law matters.

Sarah Cates joined Sarah W. Birkeland, PLLC in 2016. She earned a B.S. in Political Science from the University of Utah in 2013 and an advanced paralegal certificate from Edmonds Community College in 2015. In 2016, Sarah C. completed University of Washington’s Special Program: Limited License Legal Technician (LLLT) Family Law and passed the Washington State Bar LLLT licensing exam later that year.
Sarah C. has worked with legal aid since 2012 and is passionate about family law.
